We’re a basketball loving family! Now what does that have to do with Family activities in Oklahoma City? Let me give you some insight into my mind. We’re Chicago Bulls fans, formerly home of Taj Gibson. In February 2017, Taj was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This fact led me to research Oklahoma City. Why? Because I’m fascinated by how Taj’s life has probably changed by moving there. Again, why? I don’t know! I’m weird.
According to Wikipedia, OKC has about 1.3 million people, which is half the population of Chicago. This simple fact fascinated me. My imagination went wild. I was imaging a small town where everyone knows Taj by first name because clearly he went from a giant city to itty bitty OKC….isn’t that crazy?! It is. Come on, 1.3 million people is still a lot of people. Now after all my random internet research…I want to go to Oklahoma City. It’s just a twelve hour drive from Chicago, easy peasy. We love to road trip so let’s find some things to do!
Family Activities in Oklahoma City
Currently all my insight into fun is based on my internet search, which is where you come in. Can you help me connect with another family in OKC who can provide some suggestions for us? Just a few suggestions, we aren’t expecting a tour or to meet Taj. Let us know, what are some of your favorite family activities in Oklahoma City?
For now here is what I’m thinking will be a blast:
The National Cowboy Museum
We love cowboy boots just as much as the next girl! This seems like a nice place to pick up some gear, history and fun facts for the girls. A little late for Mom to pick up an actual Cowboy but looking is allowed…kidding…sort of.
Science Museum Oklahoma
This museum will be a must because it is included in the ASTC Reciprocity program we discussed in The Mathematics of Museum Membership. As such, we get in for free and I’m not likely to pass up free. We also very much enjoy science and promoting STEM for the girls. We’ll probably spend our savings in the gift shop but to quote the genius Janet Jackson, that’s the way love goes.
Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum
While the subject of the Oklahoma City Bombing may seem heavy for Punky & Cat, I find it valuable to discuss historical events with the girls. The entire purpose of our travels and this blog is to expose children to the world; the beauty and the truth of it. I’d love some feedback on this from a local. We’ll most likely only visit the outdoor memorial which has a designated area for children.
Stars & Stripes Playground
We love to stop and just play on the swings whenever we’re in a new city. There aren’t too many variations of playgrounds from city to city but it helps the girls to just burn off some energy, get in some exercise and of course just be kids. This playground is buzzing online so I’d love to check it out. It appears to be near some water and sand so we’ll get to wiggle our toes in it. Again, we’re open to suggestions so please drop some knowledge in the comments below.
My thought was to get to OKC over Spring Break…but apparently April is Tornado Season. Who has insight into this? I need details. Punky has an irrational fear of tornados. Maybe she watched Wizard of Oz too early in life, my bad. Cal is also paranoid about these tornados. Cat and I are ready to mount Dorothy 3 to the back of our pick-up truck and drive into the eye (did you get my Twister reference?).
Two of us are pretty excited to get on the road and enjoy all the family activities in Oklahoma City, we just need to convince Cal and Punky. As I’ve mentioned a few times, we’re open to suggestions and basketball tickets if you happen to have any (wink wink).
Here’s to visiting Oklahoma City, Cheers!
Fun article! If I’m ever in the area, now I know where to take my little lady for some fun.
Thanks, Monique. We’re excited to get there too.
This post made me giggle! I never thought about visiting Oklahoma City, but you had me at “National Cowboy Museum.” lol 🙂
Right??? YeeeHaw!!! 😂
OMG those boots are perfect!! I’ve never been either but I recently read an article about how it’s one of the best places to live
We might go next week. We’re watching the weather, apparently over 40 tornadoes hit every April…I’ve been researching and watching. Fingers crossed.
Great article. My son is a Taj Gibson fan as well lol
I love how your trips are never something cliche like Disney!
LOL!!! Thanks so much. We’ve done Disney – a lot- but our own adventures are definitely my faves!
